"YIELD TO THE SPIRIT” PT II
Galatians 5:16-18 (TPT)
Year Theme: HIGH AND LIFTED UP
BIG IDEA (For Everyone)
Yielding to the Spirit always requires letting go.
Most people think the Christian life is about trying harder. Paul teaches that it is actually about surrendering deeper. We cannot hold tightly to fear, control, selfish ambition, and old ways of living while expecting to fully experience the freedom and power of the Holy Spirit.
Sometimes the greatest step forward begins by releasing what has been holding us back.
1. LETTING GO OF GETTING (v.16)
What's Happening?
Paul says that as we yield to the Spirit, we begin to abandon the cravings of our self-centered nature. The flesh constantly asks, "What can I get?" The Spirit asks, "Who can I become?"
The Spirit shifts us from accumulation to transformation.
Cliff Note (Plain Talk)
Life changes when you stop chasing what you can get and start becoming who God created you to be.
The Holy Spirit isn't trying to take something from you.
The Holy Spirit is trying to give you something greater.
Practical Application
Christian:Ask God to replace selfish desires with Kingdom priorities.
Non-Christian:Real fulfillment rarely comes from accumulating more. It comes from becoming more.
Gen Z / Millennials:Don't confuse followers, likes, promotions, or possessions with purpose.
Professionals:Build a legacy, not just a résumé.
Families:Invest more in relationships than in things.
Black Community Word:Our ancestors understood that true wealth wasn't simply ownership—it was faith, family, education, dignity, and leaving something stronger for the next generation.
This Week:Identify one thing you've been chasing that may be distracting you from becoming who God is calling you to be.
2. LETTING GO OF FEAR (v.17)
What's Happening?
Paul describes the tension between the flesh and the Spirit. Fear often keeps us clinging to what is familiar, even when God is calling us somewhere greater.
The struggle isn't proof that you're failing.
It's evidence that growth is happening.
➡️ Fear loses its power when faith takes the lead.
Cliff Note (Plain Talk)
You don't have to wait until you're fearless.
You simply have to trust God enough to keep moving.
Practical Application
Christian:Stop allowing fear to make decisions that belong to faith.
Non-Christian:Growth always requires stepping beyond your comfort zone.
Gen Z / Millennials:Don't let anxiety become your identity.
Professionals:Every promotion, business venture, and innovation requires healthy risk.
Families:Create an environment where vulnerability is welcomed instead of judged.
Black Community Word:So much of our history has been defined by courageous people who moved forward despite fear—building churches, businesses, schools, neighborhoods, and movements because faith was greater than fear.
This Week:Do one thing you've been avoiding simply because you've been afraid.
3. LETTING GO TO ENCOUNTER GOD
(v.18)
What's Happening?
Paul says those who are led by the Spirit are no longer controlled by the old system.
Yielding isn't giving up.
It's giving God room.
When we release control, pride, and the need to manage every outcome, we create space to experience God's presence in deeper ways.
Encountering God begins where striving ends.
Cliff Note (Plain Talk)
You cannot fully receive with closed hands.
Sometimes God asks you to let go—not because He's taking something away—but because He's preparing you to receive something greater.
Practical Application
Christian:Release the need to control every outcome and trust God's leading.
Non-Christian:You don't have to have everything figured out before taking your next faithful step.
Gen Z / Millennials:Stop carrying every burden by yourself. Strength also looks like surrender.
Professionals:Lead responsibly, but don't confuse leadership with control. Leave room for wisdom beyond your own.
Families:Practice forgiveness, grace, and open communication. Healthy families grow when people let go of resentment.
Black Community Word:Our community has always survived because people learned to surrender bitterness without surrendering hope. We have continually released despair while holding onto God's promise of a better future.
This Week:What burden have you been carrying that God never intended you to carry alone? Place it in His hands.
BIG PICTURE TRUTH
Yielding to the Spirit means letting go...
of selfish ambition,
of fear,
and ultimately,
of the illusion that we have to control everything.
Only then can we truly encounter God.
Because the Holy Spirit doesn't simply change your behavior.
The Holy Spirit changes your heart.
And changed hearts change lives.
