BIG IDEA (For Everyone)

Sometimes the place you think you're merely passing through is the very place God intends to launch you from.

Moses does not encounter God while pursuing some extraordinary spiritual experience. He is working, tending somebody else's sheep, walking through the ordinary rhythm of his life when an ordinary bush becomes extraordinary because God is there. The ground becomes holy not because Moses traveled to some spectacular destination, but because God's presence transformed the place where Moses was already standing. And from that ground, God connects Moses' everyday experience to something much larger—the cries of an oppressed people and God's determination to liberate them.

That's what makes holy ground a launching pad: God meets you where you are, awakens you to what could be, and sends you toward somebody else's freedom.

Don't overlook where you are because you're dreaming about where you're going. The ground beneath you may already be your launching pad.

1. RIGHT THERE IN YOUR EVERYDAY WALKING-AROUND LIFE (vv. 1–3)

What's Happening?

Moses is keeping Jethro's flock.

No palace.

No platform.

No audience.

He's working.

And remarkably, Horeb is called "the mountain of God" before Moses knows anything extraordinary is about to happen there.

Then a bush burns without being consumed.

Moses could have kept walking. Instead, he says:

"I will now turn aside, and see..."

That decision matters.

God interrupts the ordinary with the extraordinary, but Moses has to be attentive enough to notice.

A launching pad is designed to hold enormous possibility while appearing stationary. Before anything rises, there is preparation happening on the ground. Moses' years in Midian may have looked like an interruption to his destiny, but the wilderness was becoming the ground from which God would launch his next assignment.

➡️ Ordinary ground becomes holy ground when we become attentive to God's presence upon it.

Stop waiting for your "real life" to begin.

God may already be working through the job, neighborhood, family, friendships, responsibilities, and experiences you have right now.

Practical Applications

Christian:Practice looking for God in ordinary routines, not only extraordinary worship experiences. Your workplace, kitchen, classroom, commute, or neighborhood can become holy ground.

Non-Christian:Purpose often emerges from paying closer attention to ordinary life. Notice what repeatedly moves you, troubles you, excites you, or awakens your curiosity.

Gen Z / Millennials:Don't dismiss a season because it isn't Instagram-worthy or doesn't look like the future you imagined. Some seasons are preparing you more than promoting you.

Professionals:Your current assignment may be developing competencies, relationships, and perspectives necessary for your next one. Don't despise developmental seasons.

Families & Friends:Some of your greatest launching pads are people. Family, friends, mentors, teachers, neighbors, and elders can see possibilities in you before you recognize them yourself.

Black Community Word:Black people have repeatedly transformed ordinary places into launching pads: kitchens into strategy rooms, storefronts into businesses, church basements into organizing centers, living rooms into classrooms, and sanctuaries into movements. We learned that the power of a place is not determined solely by its resources but by what a people believe can spring forth from it.

This Week:Look again at something you've been calling "ordinary." Ask: "What might God be developing here that I've been too busy to notice?"

2. RIGHT THERE IN YOUR CURIOSITY FOR THE PROMISES OF LIFE (vv. 4–6)

What's Happening?

The turning point is subtle but powerful:

"When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him..."

Moses gets curious.

He moves toward what he doesn't understand.

And when he does, God calls his name:

"Moses, Moses."

God then tells him to remove his sandals because the ground is holy.

The removal of the sandals represents reverence and willing submission. Moses is discovering that the presence of God has transformed both the ground and the conversation.

And notice what God says next:

"I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob."

Moses' future is being launched through a promise that existed before he was born.

➡️ Sometimes curiosity is the doorway through which calling enters.

Pay attention to what makes you turn aside.

The questions you can't shake may be pointing toward the future you're supposed to pursue.

Practical Applications

Christian:Don't be afraid to bring your questions into God's presence. Curiosity and reverence can coexist.

Non-Christian:You don't need every answer before exploring what gives your life meaning. Sometimes purpose begins with the courage to investigate.

Gen Z / Millennials:Ask better questions about your future—not simply, "How much can I make?" but, "What kind of person am I becoming, and what difference can my life make?"

Professionals:Curiosity is essential to innovation. Pay attention to problems others have learned to accept; your question may become somebody's solution.

Families & Friends:Tell the stories. Moses' encounter connects him to generations before him. Family stories, community history, and intergenerational wisdom can help younger generations understand the promises they have inherited.

Black Community Word:Our curiosity must include recovering what came before us. There are dreams, institutions, intellectual traditions, spiritual wisdom, businesses, land, movements, and unfinished work handed down by generations of Black people. Sometimes discovering your launching pad requires discovering whose shoulders you're already standing on.

This Week:Follow one holy curiosity. Research it. Ask somebody about it. Pray over it. Have the conversation. Turn aside and see.

3. RIGHT THERE IN YOUR WILLINGNESS TO GO (vv. 7–10)

What's Happening?

Now the encounter turns outward.

God says:

"I have seen.""I have heard.""I know."

God is attentive to Israel's affliction, cries, and suffering.

But then comes the decisive movement:

"I am come down to deliver them..."

God doesn't merely observe suffering.

God mobilizes against it.

And then comes the surprise.

God says to Moses:

"Come now therefore, and I will send thee..."

God's answer to Israel's cry includes Moses.

The burning bush wasn't merely intended to give Moses a personal spiritual experience. The encounter was preparing him for an assignment.

Eventually signs and wonders will follow—rod, river, plagues, deliverance—but first there must be somebody willing to go.

➡️ An encounter with the Holy becomes transformative when "Here am I" eventually becomes "Send me."

God may answer somebody else's prayer by sending you.

Your gifts, education, relationships, resources, testimony, and influence may be part of God's response to something hurting in the world.

Practical Applications

Christian:Move beyond asking only what God can do for you. Ask, "God, where are You sending me?"

Non-Christian:Purpose often becomes clearer when you identify a real human need that your abilities can help address.

Gen Z / Millennials:You don't have to solve everything. Find the piece of the problem you're equipped to address and start there.

Professionals:Your expertise can become ministry in the broadest sense—law, medicine, finance, education, technology, entrepreneurship, government, or the arts can all become instruments of human flourishing.

Families & Friends:Our relationships should do more than comfort us; they should call something greater out of us. Healthy community both supports and sends.

Black Community Word:Our community does not need only successful Black individuals; we need successful Black people willing to turn achievement into infrastructure, access, mentorship, investment, advocacy, and opportunity. Personal elevation reaches its Kingdom purpose when somebody else rises because you rose.

This Week:Identify one need within your family, circle of friends, church, workplace, or community where you can move from concern to action.

BIG PICTURE TRUTH

A launchpad does something fascinating.

It holds you before it releases you.

It supports the weight.

It supplies what is needed.

It absorbs the violence of ignition.

And then, at the appointed moment, what looked stationary lifts off.

Maybe that is what some of our families, friendships, churches, mentors, neighborhoods, and difficult seasons have been doing for us all along.

They held us.

They fueled us.

They corrected us.

They protected us.

They prepared us.

And sometimes they absorbed some fire so that we could rise.

That makes Family & Friends Month particularly appropriate for Holy Ground.

Before celebrating where you're going, remember the people and places from which God launched you.

FINAL WORD

So this month, don't go searching only for some spectacular place where God might meet you.

Look right there.

Right there in your everyday walking-around life.

Right there in the curiosity that keeps pulling at you.

Right there in the family that formed you.

Right there in the friends who challenge you.

Right there in the community whose cries you can hear.

Right there in your willingness to say:

"Here am I."

Because the same God who says,

"I have seen."

"I have heard."

"I know."

also says,

"I have come down."

And then God turns toward ordinary people like Moses—and ordinary people like us—and says:

"I will send thee."

Dream Big.See possibilities beyond the desert you're standing in.

Decide to Become.Allow holy ground to prepare you for what the promise requires.

Demonstrate Your Power.Get willing to go where your gifts, resources, relationships, and influence can participate in somebody else's liberation.

And live High And Lifted Up—remembering that sometimes the ground beneath your feet is not where God intends you to remain.

It is your launching pad.
