“WAIT... BUT GOD” - II Corinthians 4:7–9 (NIV)
Year Theme: HIGH AND LIFTED UPMonthly Emphasis: Revisiting What We Believe—Our Core Values, So Our Vision Can Mature in Us as We Mature into It.
BIG IDEA (For Everyone)
Every life will have moments when all you can honestly say is, "Wait..."
Wait...this isn't how I planned it.
Wait...I didn't see this coming.
Wait...how am I going to make it?
But the believer never stops at "Wait."
The believer learns to say, "Wait...BUT GOD."
Our core values remind us that worship is not determined by our circumstances. Worship teaches us to honor God publicly and privately in every season because God's power is often revealed most clearly when we feel weakest.
The "But God" moments are where ordinary people encounter the extraordinary presence of God.
1. I HONOR THE GOD IN ME (v.7)
What's Happening?
Paul reminds us that we are "jars of clay"—ordinary, fragile, imperfect people carrying an extraordinary treasure. The power isn't in the container; it's in what God has placed inside it.
Our weaknesses don't disqualify us.
They reveal God's strength.
God's power shines brightest through surrendered people.
Cliff Note (Plain Talk)
Stop judging your worth by your weaknesses.
You are carrying something greater than what you're going through.
Practical Application
Christian:Honor God's presence within you instead of constantly focusing on your imperfections.
Non-Christian:You possess gifts, dignity, and purpose that no failure can erase.
Gen Z / Millennials:Your value isn't determined by likes, followers, or comparisons. Your greatest treasure is already inside you.
Professionals:Lead with authenticity. Real influence comes from character, not perfection.
Families:Affirm the God-given potential in one another instead of only pointing out flaws.
Black Community Word:Our history reminds us that God has always placed extraordinary strength inside ordinary people. Even when society underestimated Black lives, God never underestimated the treasure within us. Our ancestors carried faith, brilliance, resilience, and hope in what the world considered fragile vessels.
This Week:Instead of criticizing yourself, thank God for one gift He has already placed within you.
2. I HONOR GOD'S WAY FOR MY LIFE (v.8)
What's Happening?
Paul doesn't deny hardship.
He says:
Hard pressed...
but not crushed.
Perplexed...
but not in despair.
Faith doesn't eliminate difficulty.
It transforms how we experience it.
➡️ God's way doesn't avoid pressure—it redeems it.
Cliff Note (Plain Talk)
Pressure doesn't mean God has abandoned you.
Sometimes pressure is preparing you.
Practical Application
Christian:Trust that God is working even when you don't yet understand His process.
Non-Christian:Challenges often develop resilience, wisdom, and strength you couldn't gain any other way.
Gen Z / Millennials:Don't confuse temporary setbacks with permanent failure.
Professionals:Every successful career includes seasons of uncertainty. Stay faithful to the process.
Families:Walk through difficult seasons together instead of isolating yourselves.
Black Community Word:Our community knows what it means to endure pressure without surrendering hope. From slavery to segregation to systemic injustice, we've continued pressing forward because God's way has always been greater than our circumstances.
This Week:Instead of asking, "Why is this happening?" ask, "What is God developing in me through this?"
3. I HONOR GOD LIFTING ME (v.9)
What's Happening?
Paul declares:
Persecuted...
but not abandoned.
Struck down...
but not destroyed.
The resurrection life of Jesus continues lifting believers every time life tries to knock them down.
God never promises you'll never fall. He promises you won't stay there.
Cliff Note (Plain Talk)
Life may knock you down.
God specializes in lifting people back up.
Practical Application
Christian:Remember that God's presence remains with you, even in seasons when you cannot feel Him.
Non-Christian:Your story isn't over because you've experienced setbacks.
Gen Z / Millennials:One mistake doesn't define your future.
Professionals:Resilience is often the greatest qualification for long-term success.
Families:Help one another get back up instead of reminding each other why you fell.
Black Community Word:Generation after generation, God has lifted Black people through every attempt to destroy our hope, dignity, and future. Our history is not merely one of survival—it is one of resurrection, restoration, and continual rising.
This Week:Encourage someone who feels knocked down. Sometimes God lifts others through us.
BIG PICTURE TRUTH
Revisiting our core values reminds us that worship isn't reserved for mountaintop moments.
Worship becomes most powerful when life says, "Wait..."
and faith responds,
"But God..."
The more our vision grows, the more our character must mature.
The more our dreams expand, the more we must learn to trust God's process.
Because mature faith doesn't deny difficulty.
It discovers God within it.
