Series: ENCOUNTERING THE HOLY

PAY ATTENTION TO THE ROAD SIGNS” - PSALM 119:9-16Year Theme: HIGH AND LIFTED UP

Monthly Emphasis: Revisiting What We Believe—Our Core Values, So Our Vision Can Mature in Us as We Mature into It.

BIG IDEA (For Everyone)

Every meaningful journey requires direction.

Whether you're driving across the country or navigating life, road signs keep you from getting lost, warn you of danger, and point you toward your destination. In the same way, God's Word and our deeply held values are spiritual road signs. Revisiting what we believe isn't about going backward—it's about making sure we're still headed in the right direction as we dream bigger, grow wiser, and become who God created us to be.

You cannot reach God's destination by ignoring God's directions.

1. I'M DETERMINED TO GET TO MY DESTINATION (vv. 9–11)

What's Happening?

The psalmist asks a timeless question: "How can a young person stay on the right path?" The answer isn't found in talent, popularity, money, or intelligence—it is found by allowing God's Word to shape the heart. God's Word becomes an internal compass that keeps us from wandering off course.

Your destination is determined by the direction you consistently follow.

Cliff Note (Plain Talk)

If you don't know what guides you, something else will.

Everyone follows something. The question is whether it's leading you toward life or away from it.

Practical Application

Christian:Return to Scripture daily so God's voice becomes louder than the world's.

Non-Christian:Healthy values create healthy decisions. Decide what principles will guide your life before life makes the decision for you.

Gen Z / Millennials:Don't let algorithms shape your identity more than your values.

Professionals:Your career should be driven by purpose, not simply promotions.

Families:Create family values that become road signs for every generation.

Black Community Word:Our ancestors survived because they passed down more than stories—they passed down values, faith, resilience, dignity, education, and hope. Those spiritual road signs still point us toward freedom today.

This Week:Write down the three values you want to define your life. Ask yourself whether your daily choices reflect them.

2. I'M SURRENDERING MY WILL TO GOD'S REVELATION (vv. 12–14)

What's Happening?

The psalmist doesn't pretend to know everything. Instead, he asks God to continue teaching him. Spiritual maturity isn't about having all the answers; it's about remaining teachable.

God always has more to reveal to those willing to learn.

Growth begins when pride ends.

Cliff Note (Plain Talk)

You can't grow if you already think you've arrived.

The people who keep growing are the people who keep learning.

Practical Application

Christian:Approach God's Word expecting Him to challenge and deepen your faith.

Non-Christian:Stay curious. The willingness to learn often opens doors that certainty never can.

Gen Z / Millennials:Don't confuse confidence with knowing everything. Stay teachable.

Professionals:The best leaders remain lifelong learners.

Families:Create spaces where questions are welcomed and wisdom is shared.

Black Community Word:Our community has always grown through continuous learning—from the hush harbors to HBCUs, from kitchen-table wisdom to classrooms, from the church pew to the boardroom. Growth requires humility.

This Week:Ask God—or simply ask yourself—"What am I resisting that I still need to learn?"

3. I'M DRAWING LIFE OUT OF THE WELL OF GOD'S WORD (vv. 15–16)

What's Happening?

The psalmist delights in God's Word. He doesn't merely read it—he meditates on it, remembers it, and allows it to nourish his life. God's Word isn't simply information; it is a living source of strength, wisdom, hope, and direction.

What you consistently draw from determines how you consistently live.

Cliff Note (Plain Talk)

You can't pour out what you've never taken in.

The healthiest lives are built from healthy wells.

Practical Application

Christian:Spend time reflecting on Scripture, not just reading it. Let it shape your thinking and actions.

Non-Christian:Choose sources of wisdom that strengthen your character rather than feed your fears.

Gen Z / Millennials:Protect your mental and spiritual health by being intentional about what fills your mind every day.

Professionals:Great decisions flow from deep values, not shallow reactions.

Families:Develop rhythms of reflection together—reading, praying, discussing, and encouraging one another.

Black Community Word:Our people have continually drawn strength from a well deeper than circumstances. God's Word sustained generations through slavery, segregation, injustice, and struggle—and it still empowers us to dream bigger and build stronger communities today.

This Week:Replace fifteen minutes of scrolling with fifteen minutes of reading, reflecting on, or journaling about something that strengthens your spirit.

BIG PICTURE TRUTH

Road signs don't exist to restrict your freedom.

They exist to protect your future.

Revisiting what we believe is not about becoming stuck in tradition. It is about remembering the convictions that keep us moving toward God's purpose.

As your vision grows...

your values must grow.

As your dreams expand...

your character must deepen.

Because vision without values eventually loses direction.
