eries: DISCERNING THE HOLY
“DISCERNING THE HOLY” – PT II
John 10:22-28 (KJV)
Year Theme: HIGH AND LIFTED UP
BIG IDEA (For Everyone)
Discerning the Holy is not just about recognizing God—it is about responding to God.
Many people in John 10 wanted proof, certainty, and answers. Jesus had already shown them who He was through His words and works. The difference was not information—it was response.
The Holy calls us to live differently, see differently, and trust differently.
1. THE HOLY CALLS YOU TO ACT BOLDLY (vv.22-23)
What's Happening?
Jesus is walking openly in Solomon's Porch during the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah), a celebration of courage, liberation, and the rededication of God's house.
The Maccabees had fought boldly to reclaim what belonged to God.
The Holy is never passive.
Cliff Note (Plain Talk)
When you discern God's presence, you cannot stay stuck in fear.
Practical Application
Christian: Take the next step God has been prompting you to take.
Non-Christian: Growth often begins when you move beyond comfort.
Gen Z / Millennials: Stop waiting for perfect conditions before pursuing purpose.
Professionals: Bold decisions often create future opportunities.
Families: Courageous conversations can create healing and unity.
Black Community Word: Our history is filled with ordinary people who acted boldly in faith, education, business, civil rights, and community building.
This Week: Identify one fear that has been holding you back and take one step beyond it.
2. THE HOLY CALLS YOU TO BE SELF-EVIDENT (vv.24-25)
What's Happening?
The crowd asks Jesus:
"If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly."
Jesus responds:
"My works already testify about who I am."
Jesus' identity was visible through His actions.
Cliff Note (Plain Talk)
Who you are should not require constant explanation.
Your life should tell the story.
Practical Application
Christian: Let your faith be seen through love, integrity, compassion, and service.
Non-Christian: Character is revealed through consistency, not claims.
Gen Z Word: Authenticity is more powerful than performance.
Professionals: Reputation is built by what you repeatedly do.
Families: Let your actions reflect your values.
Black Community Word: Our ancestors often had to let excellence, perseverance, and faith speak when others refused to hear their words.
This Week: Ask yourself, "What evidence does my life give about what I truly believe?"
3. THE HOLY CALLS YOU TO RESPOND IN FAITH (vv.26-28)
What's Happening?
Jesus says:
"My sheep hear my voice... and they follow me."
Hearing is only part of the process.
The sheep respond.
The sheep follow.
Cliff Note (Plain Talk)
Faith is not merely agreement—it is movement.
Practical Application
Christian: Trust God enough to obey, even when you don't see the whole picture.
Non-Christian: Every meaningful relationship requires trust before certainty.
Gen Z / Millennials: Don't let overthinking prevent action.
Professionals: Sometimes the next level requires trusting the process.
Families: Faith often grows through daily consistency, not dramatic moments.
Black Community Word: Many of our greatest advances happened because people moved forward by faith before circumstances changed.
This Week: Respond to one thing you know God—or your highest convictions—is calling you to do.
BIG PICTURE TRUTH
Discerning the Holy is not simply about recognition.
It is about:
acting boldly,
living authentically,
and responding faithfully.
Because knowing God's voice means very little if we never follow where it leads.
FINAL WORD
So:
Act boldly.
Let your life speak for itself.
Respond in faith.
Because...
When you discern the Holy, you stop waiting for more proof and start walking in greater purpose.
