BUILT TO SHEPHERD...NOT A HIRELING PT II - John 10:10-14
Theme: High And Lifted Up
BIG IDEA
Jesus teaches us that discerning the holy requires learning the difference between people who are committed to a purpose and people who are committed only to convenience.
The thief takes. The hireling leaves. The shepherd stays.
Whether as parents, mentors, leaders, friends, spouses, community builders, or disciples, God calls us to live with the heart of a shepherd.
1: BEWARE OF MOTIVES (v.10)
"Seeking to get more than you give?"
Jesus contrasts His mission with the mission of the thief.
The thief comes to take.Jesus comes to give.
Discerning the holy begins with examining motives. Are your actions driven by service or selfishness? Are you building others up or simply using people to get ahead?
Practical Applications
Young People
Ask yourself if your goals are only about personal success or about making a difference.
Build a life that contributes, not just consumes.
Adults
Evaluate whether your relationships are transactional or transformational.
Lead with generosity instead of scarcity.
Black Community Focus
Our ancestors survived and advanced because they invested in others, not just themselves.
Legacy grows through contribution.
This Week
Ask yourself:"Am I giving more life to the people around me or taking life from them?"
2: BEWARE OF THE LEVEL OF COMMITMENT (vv.11-13)
"Willing to only go so far?"
The hireling leaves when things become difficult. The shepherd remains when things become costly.
Real commitment is revealed under pressure.
Anyone can show up when everything is easy. The question is: what happens when the wolf appears?
Practical Applications
Young Adults
Stay committed to your growth even when results are slow.
Don't quit because the journey becomes difficult.
Parents and Fathers
Presence matters.
Continue showing up even when parenting is challenging.
Professionals
Character is often revealed during adversity, not success.
Be known as someone who follows through.
Black Men Focus
Society often questions the commitment of Black fathers and men.
This text reminds us that real shepherds stay present, protect, nurture, and guide.
This Week
Identify one area where God is calling you to move from convenience to commitment.
3: BEWARE OF THE KIND OF RELATIONSHIP (v.14)
"Is it a two-way relationship?"
Jesus says:"I know my sheep, and am known of mine."
Healthy relationships are mutual.
The shepherd knows the sheep. The sheep know the shepherd.
The holy is never merely about information—it is about connection.
Practical Applications
Young People
Pursue authentic relationships, not just online interactions.
Learn who you are before allowing others to define you.
Adults
Make time for prayer, reflection, and meaningful conversations.
Deep relationships require intentional investment.
Families
Move beyond living in the same house to truly knowing one another.
Spiritual Application
God desires more than occasional attention.
God invites us into a relationship that is personal, transformative, and ongoing.
This Week
Spend intentional time strengthening one relationship that matters most.
CLOSING CHALLENGE
The thief asks:"What can I take?"
The hireling asks:"How little can I give?"
The shepherd asks:"How can I serve?"
When we discern the holy, we stop living like hirelings and start living like shepherds.
Because we were never built merely to survive.
We were built to protect. We were built to nurture. We were built to lead.We were built to shepherd.
