“LET JACK OUT THE BOX”

Isaiah 43:15–21

Year Theme: HIGH AND LIFTED UPMonthly Focus: FAMILY & FRIENDS MONTH — Celebrating Community, Connection, and Those Who Help Us Imagine What Is Still Possible

BIG IDEA (For Everyone)

After “Flourish,” Isaiah 43 pushes us one step further: don't flourish only within the boundaries of what you already know.

Israel knows what God did. God made a way through the sea, defeated what pursued them, and established them as a people. Their history gives them every reason to trust God—but God refuses to become trapped inside their memory of God.

“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth...”

That's “Let Jack Out the Box.”

Like a jack-in-the-box, we can keep turning the same crank while expecting God to emerge according to the same familiar pattern. We can put God inside the box of our theology, traditions, expectations, disappointments, experiences—even our previous blessings.

But Isaiah says: keep the memory, lose the box.

The God who made a way through the sea can now make a way through the wilderness. The God who once moved water out of the way can now put water where there isn't any.

God's character remains faithful while God's methods remain free.

1. GOD IS BIGGER THAN HE WAS — CRANK HIM UP (vv. 15–18)

What's Happening?

God begins by reminding Israel who God is:

“I am the LORD, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.”

Then God reminds them of the Exodus—the sea, the path through mighty waters, Pharaoh's chariots and army being extinguished.

Their history matters.

Their memory matters.

Their testimony matters.

But then comes the surprise:

“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.”

God is not contradicting God's history. God is challenging Israel's tendency to make yesterday's manifestation the limit of tomorrow's possibility.

The Exodus should teach them who God is, not dictate how God must move next.

Your testimony should increase your expectation, not imprison your imagination.

Cliff Note (Plain Talk)

Don't make yesterday's blessing today's box.

If God did it before, trust God's faithfulness—but don't assume God has to do it the same way again.

Practical Application

Christian:Remember what God has done without demanding that God repeat the method. Mature faith trusts God's character even when God's movement looks unfamiliar.

Non-Christian:Past experience is valuable evidence, but it should not become a ceiling. What worked before may not be what moves your life forward now.

Gen Z / Millennials:You can honor what previous generations built without being required to reproduce every form they used. Inheritance gives you something to build from—not a box to live inside.

Professionals:Past success can become tomorrow's blind spot. Organizations, careers, and leaders stagnate when “this is how we've always done it” becomes more powerful than imagination.

Families & Friends:Honor family traditions while allowing the family to evolve. Healthy families pass down values without requiring every generation to live the same life.

Black Community Word:Our history is sacred, but Black history itself teaches us not to become trapped by old forms. Our ancestors kept taking inherited faith, culture, knowledge, music, institutions, organizing strategies, and community practices and creating something necessary for their moment. Tradition at its best is not preserving ashes; it is carrying fire.

This Week:Identify one place where “what worked before” may be preventing you from recognizing what could work now.

2. GOD CANNOT BE CONTAINED — CHASE HIS MOVES (v. 19)

What's Happening?

Here is the center of the sermon:

“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”

Notice the language.

God doesn't say merely, “I have an idea.”

God says:

“It shall spring forth.”

Something is already moving.

Something is emerging.

Something that wasn't visible is becoming visible.

And then God describes what makes this new movement so startling:

“I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.”

Previously God made a dry path through water.

Now God promises water through dry ground.

Same God.

Different move.

That is the radical freedom of God: God's newness remains consistent with God's character while refusing to be confined to God's previous methods.

If you only look for God where God moved before, you may miss where God is moving now.

Cliff Note (Plain Talk)

Stop asking the new thing to look like the old thing before you'll trust it.

Pay attention.

Something may already be springing forth.

Practical Application

Christian:Develop spiritual attentiveness. Instead of only asking God to bless your plan, ask, “God, where are You already moving, and how can I join You there?”

Non-Christian:Remain curious. Growth sometimes requires releasing an outdated picture of how your life was “supposed” to unfold.

Gen Z / Millennials:Your different way of thinking may not automatically be rebellion. Some inherited systems need your questions, creativity, technology, entrepreneurship, and new imagination.

Professionals:Innovation requires distinguishing between mission and method. Protect what matters while remaining willing to change how you accomplish it.

Families & Friends:People grow. Don't trap someone you love inside the version of them you first met. Give people room to become.

Black Community Word:Every major Black freedom movement required somebody to imagine beyond what the existing world considered possible. Our challenge now is not simply to commemorate what our ancestors did but to discern what freedom, flourishing, wealth, health, education, faith, family, and community require now.

This Week:Ask: “What is springing forth around me that I may be overlooking because it doesn't look familiar?”

3. GOD BURSTS FORTH GENEROUSLY — CATCH HIS PRESENCE (vv. 20–21)

What's Happening?

The new thing becomes abundant.

God promises:

“waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen.”

God does not provide a few drops.

Rivers.

The language is generous—large, abundant, ample, life-giving.

Even creation responds. The animals honor God because the wilderness itself is receiving water.

God's new movement doesn't merely create an escape route.

It creates an ecosystem where life can flourish.

And then verse 21 reveals purpose:

“This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.”

God's generosity toward us is meant to produce something through us.

When you catch God's presence, what you receive should become something somebody else can experience.

Cliff Note (Plain Talk)

God doesn't just want to get you through the desert.

God can bring enough life into the desert that something starts growing there.

Practical Application

Christian:Don't reduce blessing to personal acquisition. Let what God pours into you become generosity, service, hospitality, justice, witness, and praise flowing through you.

Non-Christian:A flourishing life asks more than, “What can I accumulate?” Ask, “What becomes better because I was here?”

Gen Z / Millennials:Don't measure abundance only by money. Time, creativity, relationships, knowledge, influence, emotional health, and opportunity are resources you can share.

Professionals:Success reaches maturity when your resources begin creating opportunity for others—through mentoring, hiring, investing, teaching, sponsoring, and opening doors.

Families & Friends:Be the relative or friend who creates rivers rather than drains them—the one whose presence brings encouragement, resources, connections, wisdom, laughter, and possibility.

Black Community Word:Black flourishing cannot stop with individual breakthrough. When one of us gains access, knowledge, wealth, influence, education, property, or opportunity, the larger question becomes: How can what reached me become a river that reaches somebody else? Ubuntu reminds us: I am because we are, and because we are, therefore I am.

This Week:Take one resource you possess—knowledge, access, time, encouragement, money, influence, or connection—and deliberately use it to create possibility for somebody else.

BIG PICTURE TRUTH

Isaiah gives us three movements:

CRANK HIM UP.

Remember enough about God's past faithfulness to expect something bigger than your present limitation.

CHASE HIS MOVES.

Don't become so committed to where God was that you miss where God is.

CATCH HIS PRESENCE.

And when God's generosity bursts forth, don't become a reservoir that only stores it.

Become a river that carries it forward.

That's where “Flourish” leads.

A flourishing tree does not consume everything it receives.

It produces fruit.

It provides shade.

It contributes oxygen.

It creates habitat.

Its flourishing changes the environment around it.

Real flourishing eventually becomes generosity.

FINAL WORD

GOD IS BIGGER THAN HE WAS — CRANK HIM UP.

Not because God has grown, but because your understanding of God must.

Don't make yesterday's revelation the boundary of tomorrow's possibility.

GOD CANNOT BE CONTAINED — CHASE HIS MOVES.

When God says, “Behold,” look.

When God says, “Now,” pay attention.

When God says, “It shall spring forth,” get ready to move.

GOD BURSTS FORTH GENEROUSLY — CATCH HIS PRESENCE.

And when rivers start flowing, don't cup your hands around everything God gives you.

Let it flow.

Into your family.

Into your friendships.

Into your career.

Into your business.

Into your church.

Into the Black community.

Into the neighborhood.

Into the next generation.

Dream Big.Because God's next move is not restricted to God's last one.

Decide To Become.Become flexible enough to follow God beyond what's familiar.

Demonstrate Your Power.Turn what flows into your life into something that gives life beyond you.

And live High And Lifted Up, remembering:

God is too big for the box.

And maybe the reason God is saying, “Behold,” is because the new thing isn't merely coming—it's already springing forth.
