“FREE TO SERVE” - Galatians 5:13–14 (MSG)

BIG IDEA (For Everyone)

Freedom is one of God's greatest gifts—but it is also one of God's greatest responsibilities.

Paul reminds the Galatians that Christ has set us free, not so we can simply do whatever we want, but so we can become people who love, serve, and help others flourish. Real freedom is not found in independence from everyone else; it is found in discovering that our lives are deeply connected to one another. As we revisit our core values this month, we remember that spiritual maturity is measured not by how much freedom we claim for ourselves, but by how faithfully we use our freedom to bless others.

Freedom reaches its highest expression when it becomes love in action.

1. UNSHACKLED (vv. 13a–b)

What's Happening?

Paul begins with an incredible declaration:

"God has called you to a free life."

Freedom is not something we earn.

It is something Christ has already won.

But Paul immediately warns that freedom can become dangerous if we turn it into an excuse for selfishness. The freedom Christ won should never become a "base of operations" for the flesh to regain territory in our lives. Instead of becoming enslaved again to pride, fear, or self-interest, we are called to live from the freedom God has already given us.

Christ didn't simply remove your chains; He released you into your purpose.

Freedom isn't doing whatever you want.

Freedom is becoming the person God created you to be.

Practical Application

Christian:Don't use God's grace as permission to live carelessly. Use it as power to live faithfully.

Non-Christian:Real freedom isn't the absence of responsibility; it's having the ability to choose what leads to life.

Gen Z / Millennials:Freedom isn't found in escaping every commitment. Sometimes the right commitments create the greatest freedom.

Professionals:Success without purpose can become another form of bondage. Let your work reflect your values, not merely your ambitions.

Families:Healthy families create freedom through trust, accountability, and love—not fear and control.

Black Community Word:For African Americans, freedom has never been merely a legal status. It has been a continual struggle toward dignity, opportunity, self-determination, and flourishing. The Gospel reminds us that Christ calls us beyond surviving oppression into becoming a people who use our freedom to build stronger families, neighborhoods, institutions, and communities.

This Week:Ask yourself, "Am I using my freedom to serve only myself, or to help someone else become free?"

2. UNINHIBITED (v. 13c)

What's Happening?

Paul gives the surprising command:

"Use your freedom to serve one another in love."

The world often defines freedom as the absence of obligation.

Paul defines freedom as the ability to love without fear.

When we are no longer controlled by pride, comparison, or insecurity, we become uninhibited in generosity, compassion, forgiveness, and service.

The freest people are those who no longer need to make life all about themselves.

When love replaces fear, service becomes joy instead of obligation.

Practical Application

Christian:Look for opportunities to serve quietly, faithfully, and joyfully without seeking recognition.

Non-Christian:Communities become stronger when people ask, "How can I help?" instead of "What's in it for me?"

Gen Z / Millennials:Don't be afraid to use your gifts boldly. The world needs what only you can contribute.

Professionals:The best leaders remove barriers so others can thrive.

Families:Serve one another intentionally. Small acts of kindness build lasting relationships.

Black Community Word:The Black Church has long demonstrated this freedom through ministries of food, education, healthcare, mentoring, advocacy, and worship. Service has never been a sign of weakness; it has been one of our greatest demonstrations of spiritual strength and communal resilience.

This Week:Perform one act of service anonymously. Let your love speak louder than your name.

3. UBUNTU (v. 14)

What's Happening?

Paul summarizes the entire law:

"Love others as you love yourself."

This echoes the ancient biblical conviction that our lives are bound together.

Ubuntu expresses this beautifully:

"I am because we are, and because we are, therefore I am."

Love is not simply an emotion.

It is the recognition that another person's flourishing contributes to my own.

God's freedom always leads us back into community.

You cannot fully become who you're meant to be without helping others become who they're meant to be.

Practical Application

Christian:Practice loving your neighbor in tangible ways that restore dignity and build community.

Non-Christian:Healthy societies are built when people recognize that everyone's well-being matters.

Gen Z / Millennials:Use social media and technology to create connection rather than comparison and division.

Professionals:Ask not only, "How do I succeed?" but also, "Who succeeds because I'm here?"

Families:Teach children that success is measured not only by achievement but also by contribution.

Black Community Word:Ubuntu has always lived within the Black Church, even when we didn't use the word. We built schools because children belonged to the whole community. We organized burial societies because grief belonged to the whole community. We created mutual aid societies because poverty belonged to the whole community. We marched for civil rights because justice belonged to the whole community. Our greatest witness has never been isolated success but collective flourishing.

This Week:Identify one way your gifts, resources, or influence can strengthen someone else's future.

BIG PICTURE TRUTH

Revisiting our core values reminds us that Christian freedom is not self-centered independence.

It is Spirit-led interdependence.

Christ frees us…

• from sin,

• from fear,

• from pride,

• and from isolation,

so that we can become people who freely love, freely serve, and freely build communities where everyone has the opportunity to flourish.

Because freedom isn't proven by what we can do for ourselves.

Freedom is revealed by what we're willing to do for one another.

FINAL WORD

So…

Live as one who has been unshackled by Christ.

Love with an uninhibited heart that is free from fear.

Embrace Ubuntu by recognizing that your flourishing is connected to the flourishing of others.

Because…

Christ didn't set us free simply to live without chains.

He set us free to become people who help remove the chains from others.

As we revisit our Affirmation of Faith, we are reminded that every freedom God gives us carries a responsibility to love more deeply, serve more faithfully, and build more intentionally. That is how the vision of God matures within us—and how we mature into the people God is calling us to become.

The highest expression of freedom is not independence. It is the freedom to love so completely that your life becomes part of God's work of setting other people free.
