SPRING FORTH NOW

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:1-4

As we celebrate Pentecost Sunday today, we are reminded that the power of the Spirit is mighty and can cause one to do the impossible, even beyond our human limitations and fears. The Day of Pentecost was a direct result of 120 of Christ’s disciples who, limited in human abilities and afraid of the threats to their life and way, found a common space, physically and metaphorically, uniting them and as a result a Spirit arose in their space and filled them all. The filling by the Spirit flowing from the space, the house in which they were sitting correlates with the understanding of Ubuntu, I am because you are and you are because I am, the sense of community in the African tradition that generates power not from individuals but instead community, a direct result of the space occupied. Life and its challenges continue to penetrate our lives, individually and collectively, however, the appropriate response is one accord-ness of individuals occupying that space, producing power to overcome the limitations and boldly standing up, overcoming and inheriting the promises of God. We must decide in our spaces, metaphorically and physically, to Accumulate power through our coming together in a space of harmony, different as we maybe but operating together as a cord in one accord, empowering and filling all to Soar in the fulfillment of God’s promises. The power of our harmony in the same space produces a Spirit not just to empower individuals but to first empower the space, community, Ubuntu in which it will fill alll those in the community where I am you and you are me.
